Advancements in
medical science regarding Stem Cells and Cell Therapy are opening new horizons
in treating severe, complex diseases, including conditions with limited
treatment options. However, harvesting and processing cells for therapeutic use
cannot be carried out in conventional laboratories. Cells intended for patient
administration require rigorous production and quality control processes inside
high-purity, high-safety cell culture rooms (cleanrooms) equipped with
specialized instruments, managed by expert personnel, and governed by
standardized quality control systems.
To address
this, the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, and King Chulalongkorn
Memorial Hospital, Thai Red Cross Society, established the Center of Excellence
in Stem Cell and Cell Therapy. The center aims to develop knowledge and advance
domestic cell production capabilities for clinical treatment in Thailand. To
date, the laboratory has successfully manufactured cell products for clinical
applications—such as corneal stem cell sheets and oral mucosal epithelial
sheets for corneal disease patients—helping a number of patients regain their
vision and quality of life.
Today, cell
therapy is evolving rapidly, particularly in gene-edited cell therapies and
novel cellular modalities, which hold strong potential for treating
life-threatening and genetic conditions. Concurrently, the number of patients
requiring treatment and the types of cell products needed are on the rise.
However, limitations in existing equipment and laboratory space prevent the
facility from meeting total patient demand. Acquiring specialized equipment and
expanding cleanroom capacity are vital steps to enable medical teams to
accommodate more patients and support innovative therapies.
Every stage of
processing cells for patient re-infusion—from culturing and environmental
control to quality and safety testing—requires meticulous oversight. This
project focuses on procuring advanced equipment for cell culture and
processing, renovating and expanding cleanroom facilities, and raising quality
control systems to meet relevant Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards,
ensuring safe and efficient cell production for clinical use. Achieving
self-sufficiency in medical cell production within Thailand will enhance local
capacity to develop tailored treatments for Thai patients, reduce dependency on
imported technologies or products, and lower import-related costs—ultimately
broadening patient access to advanced therapies in the long run.
Your donations
will go directly toward procuring cell culture and manufacturing equipment,
renovating and expanding cleanroom spaces, upgrading laboratory facilities and
quality control systems to meet international standards, and training
specialized personnel, with an overall fundraising target of 24 million THB.
Every contribution—from individual donors and major philanthropists to
corporate supporters—is more than a donation for medical equipment. It is an
investment in creating a "Space of Opportunity" that bridges the gap
between laboratory research and clinical treatment, giving patients with
hard-to-treat diseases greater access to therapeutic choices and fostering
advanced medical technology development right here in Thailand.
