Detail

"Cleft lip, cleft palate and other deformities” is a cell imperfection that occurs during a mother's pregnancy and directly affect the fetus or while pregnant. If the mother has been poisoned certain chemicals are heavy smoking or alcohol, including malnutrition such as folic acid deficiency during pregnancy which is necessary for the development of the baby. When born, some or all parts of the cleft may occur. Even though these children have normal brain but the development will be slow due to not dare to talk from childhood to growing up and being an inferiority complex. Therefore, there is a time frame of treatment, for example, if the child is treated at age 7-8, the treatment will be delayed and not able to fix well even if the palate is repaired, it still cannot speak clearly for the rest of their lives because the child is accustomed to the vulnerability. Therefore, children with cleft lip should receive treatment from 3 months of age, and cleft palate treatment from 9 months of age, but not more than 1 and a half years old.

With awareness of such problems, Relief and Community Health Bureau at Thai Red Cross Society has initiated a cosmetic surgery program to correct cleft lip, cleft palate and other deformities in 1998, Over a period of 20 years, providing a mobile medical unit for community field visit to offer help and heal, value of 6 provinces, 1 week per year, which is a proactive project that searches for disadvantaged patients and takes them to undergo surgery. Each province has an average of 50 surgeries at a time, and in some provinces, there are more than 100. Until now, there were more than 6,000 service recipients, which were about 300 patients per year.

Thai Red Cross Society by the Fundraising Bureau honorly invites you all charitable donors and sponsors to join us to be a part of returning smiles to underprivileged children born with a cleft lip, cleft palate and other deformities whom lack access to medical treatment, have returned from suffering to a new quality of life and a radiant smile, living happily ever after and being a confident child with self-esteem and dare to speak up.
